KEITH PAYNE ~
KEITH PAYNE ~

There is a space created in the mind when in the presence of the subtle energies of stone in nature. Where the earth radiates these energies with particular power, people from earliest times have been attracted to them, and deemed them sacred. In such spaces, shifts of perception occur, often leading to a need for expression ,thus a mark, a symbol, even the print of a hand may be left. Cognition of these marks empowers others to add their experiences visually, and slowly a language is born. The sacred place becomes a communal focus where gatherings for ritual and ancient stories are enacted.

Illustration is required, artists chosen to recall the images that inspire the people to retain their memories and beliefs. Caves and shelters become sanctuaries where shamanic guides instruct communities in the deepest laws of nature, healing, and spiritual understanding.

On mountains, in forests, deserts and plains, Petroglyphs on rock, Pictographs in shelters, Prehistoric rock art is profuse on every continent. From simple cup marks in aboriginal Australia to the beautiful and refined palaeolithic cave paintings of Europe, through aeons the peoples of the ancient world have recorded life as art.

It is from this record that I draw inspiration.
