"John Doherty's realism is immediately attractive for the apparent normalness of the images, the comforting familiarity of a quiet street in an out-of-the-way country town, old petrol pumps and garages that are a necessity of life, boats and lighthouses seen on bright days without any hint of storm. The colours are clean andcheerful, the subjects - even when shabby - are attractive and human. That's as it is on the surface, and it takes the artists to unveil the layers beneath.
Many of us have been fascinated during childhood and after how the windows of a house or cottage seem like eyes looking out, the position of the curtains alltering the house's expression. In the imagination the inanimate attains a human dynamic.
Doherty plays on this natural tendency as he beguiles us. He sets a scene, he enhances the physical properties to emphasise the independence of its existence, and then he explores the unseen story as he construes it, on a deeper plane, so as to put across his own message."
