HOLGER LÖNZE ~ An tÉan Mara - The Sea Bird

Holger C. Lönze is a sculptor working in bronze. Since moving to Northern Ireland in 1995, he has widely exhibited in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy and Spain and has worked on projects in the public domain for fifteen years. A furniture maker by trade, he studied architecture in Detmold where he became assistant to sculptor Axel Seyler. At the University of Ulster in Belfast he studied lithography and sculpture, completing a Ph.D on visual perception of time in sculpture. As a researcher in environmental design for The Eden Project and Falmouth College of Arts, Cornwall he further pursued his interests in craft materials and continues to research in experimental archaeology, particularly Bronze Age metal casting. His public work for Portrush East Strand was nominated for the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture in 2012 and he collaborated with landscape designer Hugo Bugg on the Gold-winning RBC Stormwater Garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014.

Holger’s work is a poetic response to Europe's Celtic seaboard: its rich maritime culture, language, early literature, archaeology and coastline. The inspiration for his sculpture and graphic work is informed by ancient voyage tales and his own sea journeys in self-made curachs. Rich experience in the arts and crafts have led him to produce work that is rooted in traditional techniques and materials while being contemporary in concept and context. He uses bronze and steel in combination with ancient and environmentally sustainable techniques such as repoussé and carbon-neutral Bronze Age casting. A well-informed realism gives his work an ancient, archaic and often mythological character.
