Harriet’s practice is concerned with rethinking the painted portrait and valuing the genre within the contemporary art world. She is creating the unexpected, through the removal and remodelling of conventions in portraiture.
Recently, she has focused on subtly obscuring the formalities of the passport photo - an object representing a great deal, both visually and politically. Regulated and minimalised, it supposedly portrays the most accurate representation of a person, while also stripping one of personality, representing only facial anatomy. The fascination of a painted passport photo is elevated, particularly when repeated. There is intensity, delicacy and intrigue within the 35mm x 45mm portraits.
Harriet graduates this summer from Fine Art Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. She has recently shown work in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Schull and was shortlisted for the Astaire Art Prize 2015.
